Backing up your computer (You will need a USB hard drive or memory stick to complete these steps)
You can either use windows backup to backup your files or just copy the file and folder to your USB drive.
Creating recovery disk for the current version of windows (you will need multiple DVD or a USB to complete these steps)
You may already have the recovery disk for your computer when you fist purchased it or you may need to create them, Creating the recovery disk can differ from computer make, model and what recovery software is used by the manufacture, You can try to create the recovery disk by going to the start menu and type in recovery you should then see an option to the recovery software and you will need to follow the creation of the recovery media on the screen.
If you do not find any recovery software or create recovery media you will need to consult the manufactures website.
Checking your computer is up to date using Windows updates
Open the start menu and type windows updates, click to open the windows update windows and click check for updates, if there are any available updates please install them (you will need to repeat these steps until there are no available updates left).
Check the manufactures website for issue and updates before and after the upgrade
It is also recommended to go to the computer manufactures website to check if there are any updates required before or after the update. You can usually find the computer make and model on the bottom or back of the laptop or desktop or around the screen e.g. I found the make “Dell” and model “XPS 12”
So I would open my web browser and Google: Dell XPS 12 upgrade to windows 10 or just Dell XPS 12. not all manufactures would test all of there system for the windows 10 upgrade so don’t worry if you don’t find anything, We just need to make sure we have created recovery media and create a backup of your data.
These are all the steps we would recommend to take before upgrading to windows 10, we will be adding more information as it becomes available.
